The Complete SEO Checklist for 2026: 40 Steps to Rank Higher on Google

Search has changed more in the last two years than in the previous ten. AI Overviews, conversational search and stricter quality standards mean the old playbook of stuffing keywords and buying links no longer works. The good news? The fundamentals of helpful, technically sound, authoritative websites matter more than ever.

Here's the checklist our SEO team uses to audit and grow every client website.

1. Technical SEO foundations

  • Verify Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your XML sitemap.
  • Check indexation: make sure important pages are indexed and low-value pages (tag archives, filters, thank-you pages) are not.
  • Pass Core Web Vitals: aim for LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms and CLS under 0.1.
  • Use HTTPS everywhere and redirect all HTTP and non-www/www variations to one canonical version.
  • Fix broken links and redirect chains using a crawler such as Screaming Frog.
  • Add structured data — Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, Article, Product and Breadcrumb schema where relevant.
  • Build a logical site architecture where every important page is within three clicks of the homepage.

2. On-page optimisation

  • Write a unique, compelling title tag (50–60 characters) for every page with the primary keyword near the front.
  • Write meta descriptions that sell the click, with a clear benefit and call to action.
  • Use one H1 per page and a logical H2/H3 hierarchy.
  • Optimise images with descriptive file names, alt text, modern formats (WebP/AVIF) and lazy loading.
  • Add internal links with descriptive anchor text between related pages.
  • Keep URLs short, readable and keyword-relevant.

3. Content & E-E-A-T

Google's quality guidelines emphasise Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. Show real first-hand experience: original data, case studies, photos, and named expert authors with bios.

Pro tip: Build topic clusters. One comprehensive pillar page supported by 8–15 detailed articles, all interlinked, signals deep topical authority far better than scattered posts.

  • Match search intent — informational, commercial or transactional — before writing a single word.
  • Answer related questions ("People also ask") within your content.
  • Refresh and update older content regularly — outdated information quietly loses rankings.

4. Optimising for AI Overviews & answer engines

AI-generated answers now appear for many queries, and tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity are becoming discovery channels. To be cited:

  • Give clear, concise answers directly under question-style headings.
  • Use lists, tables and definitions that are easy to extract.
  • Strengthen your brand's entity signals: consistent business information, reviews, mentions and profiles across the web.
  • Publish original research and expert perspectives that AI systems want to reference.

5. Authority & link building

  • Earn links through digital PR, original data and genuinely useful resources.
  • Get featured on industry publications and podcasts.
  • Build local links from associations, events and partners.
  • Avoid paid link schemes and PBNs — the risk isn't worth it.

6. Measurement

Track rankings, but focus on what pays the bills: organic traffic to commercial pages, conversions, leads and revenue. Set up GA4 conversions and a Looker Studio dashboard so you can see the real business impact of SEO.
